President Ruto: It’s Time To Review The East African Community Treaty

President William Ruto has expressed support for a review of the East African Community Treaty, stating that there are various areas that need to be revised. Speaking at State House in Nairobi, Ruto noted that the EALA’s use of language, financial autonomy, and capture of new developments was among the areas that require a review.

The President was responding to EALA Speaker Joseph Nkakirutimana’s request for a review of the EAC Treaty. Nkakirutimana and other delegates were hosted by President Ruto at State House, Nairobi. East African Community CS Rebecca Miano was also at State House for the meeting while the speaker was accompanied by Kenya EALA MPs Hassan Omar, Kanini Kega, and Zipporah Kering, and EALA deputy clerk John Mutega.

Ruto commended the progress made by the EAC since its establishment 25 years ago, noting that it had grown from a three-member bloc to seven members. Somalia is expected to become the latest member to join the EAC, and there is a possibility that Ethiopia and Sudan could follow. The President highlighted that the bloc must, therefore, build enough capacity required by a huge regional bloc.

“The Council of Ministers is looking into the matter and has tasked the EAC secretariat to come up with a plan,” he said.

worked for 20 years, are among the challenges facing EALA, according to Speaker Nkakirutimana. He urged EALA to lead the conversation on taking the regional bloc to the next level.

“EALA is the best-placed organ in the EAC to lead the conversation on ways of taking the regional bloc to the next level,” he said.
